Building together - Autumn 2024
Results updated 7 Mar 2025
During the autumn of 2024, we came out to speak to our neighbours who both live and work around our Aldermaston and Burghfield sites. Our intention was to introduce ourselves to the community, talk about what we do and let people know about the significant infrastructure investment that is being made in our facilities.
Over seven weeks we held six in-person and two online events and were pleased to be able to speak to so many people. We had over 300 people visit our sessions and 71 responded to our survey.
Thank you to those who provided us with feedback, either through the survey or in-person. We've taken your comments and below is a summary of your feedback. You can read the full report, and view the summary as a pdf, further down this page.
We look forward to seeing you at future public events later this year.

Overview
Our work at AWE protects the UK through nuclear science and technology.
This work is only possible thanks to our dedicated, diverse and skilled workforce, many of whom live in the local area. Our communities provide us with apprentices, graduates and many others who join our unique business and who, in turn, use local businesses and facilities.
The UK government has committed to investing in AWE so that we continue to support the country’s nuclear deterrent and nuclear threat reduction activities.
This significant investment means AWE will continue to be a major employer and neighbour in the local area for many years to come.
It’s important that we work alongside you as our plans for the future are developed.

What happens next
We appreciate you taking the time to talk to us and give us your views.
At our autumn events we said we would develop an AWE Community Charter, that we will share with you and that you can hold us to.
At our sessions we said our first charter commitment would be:
- We will do our best to give you as much information as we can, but in a way that also protects our people, our work and our nation’s security.
As a result of your feedback at our autumn events we have developed a second commitment:
- We will be more proactive in telling you about the unique work that takes place behind our fences.
We will come back to you later this year with further information on our future plans.
