Future Materials Campus - Summer 2026

Overview

The UK is replacing its current nuclear warhead and our skilled teams at AWE will carry out this work.

That’s why we plan to improve the facilities at our existing Aldermaston site by building the Future Materials Campus.

What is the Future Materials Campus?

The Future Materials Campus is a major construction programme to improve the facilities at our Aldermaston site.

It will replace older buildings and improve how we make, store and study the materials used in our work. It will also improve how we safely treat and reuse these materials, where possible, to reduce waste.

Why your views matter

Thank you to everyone who visited one of our community drop-ins during June and July 2026 and completed our online feedback form.

It’s important to us that we engage with you as we plan and build the Future Materials Campus.

Your feedback helps us understand what matters to you and how our plans could affect the local community. We will consider your comments as we continue to develop our proposals.

We will publish a summary of the feedback we receive on this website before we submit our planning application.

What happens next

We expect to submit an outline planning application to West Berkshire District Council in winter 2026.

At that point, there will be another opportunity for you to comment on our plans. We expect a decision on this application in 2027.

If approved, we will then seek approval for the detail of each building separately. You will have further chances to comment on the design of individual buildings. This process will take place over several years.
